IAJE GOES BANKRUPT
Imagine my shock and dismay when I received an email
this morning telling me that The IAJE
(International Association for Jazz Education) has filed for
bankruptcy under Chapter 7 of
the Federal Bankruptcy Law. In the immediate future, a State of
Kansas bankruptcy court will
appoint a trustee to oversee all ongoing aspects of this
familiar Jazz association. The IAJE
Board will no longer be involved in operation of the
organization and will, at some point, resign
their duties. IAJE, as it presently stands, will no longer
exist. Communications to the
membership had outlined this crisis and in spite of several
independent and generous donations,
there just wasn't enough money to keep the organization afloat.
It should be noted that the
attendance at the conference in Toronto was the lowest
attendance in the past ten years. It is
still questionable about how the operations of individual
chapters and affiliated associations will
be affected by this filing. An IAJE letter states that it views
these entities as totally and
completely independent. Since these matters are in the hands of
the court, Chapters may
anticipate that they will be contacted by the Bankruptcy Court
to determine the impact. For the
time being, the IAJE website will remain up. However, the
international offices of IAJE have
closed their doors as of Friday, Aril 18, 2008. For more
information go to www.iaje.org or pose
questions to info@iaje.org.
